Deep Geothermal
Tapping the heat of the Fennoscandian Shield
Beneath Sweden lies the Fennoscandian Shield, ancient crystalline bedrock that grows steadily hotter with depth. At five to seven kilometres, temperatures exceed 120 Β°C, enough to feed district-heating networks, and in time power generation, with a stable, weather-independent renewable resource. Pioneering wells have already proven the concept in Nordic rock: the FFC-1 well in MalmΓΆ was deepened to 3.1 km into the crystalline basement in 2020, the DGE-1 well in Lund reached 3.7 km, and in the same Shield geology in Espoo, Finland, St1 drilled the world's deepest geothermal wells to 6.4 km and safely stimulated the reservoir.
Deep geothermal has historically been held back by drilling cost, traditionally more than half of a project's total capital cost. That is changing fast. Techniques transferred from the shale industry, including polycrystalline diamond (PDC) drill bits, horizontal drilling and repeatable well-factory learning curves, have cut drilling times in hard granite by 70% in two years, roughly halving the cost per well, while research programmes have increased penetration rates in crystalline rock five-fold. What was uneconomic a decade ago is rapidly approaching commercial viability, and Sweden's geology is ready for it.

Reduction in hard-rock drilling time achieved between 2022 and 2024 using PDC bits and repeatable well factories, roughly halving the cost per well.
